Abstract:
This article aims to examine the specific characteristics of Ukrainian-Chinese foreign economic cooperation during the period of 2019–2024, reflect the impact of the Ukrainian-russian war on trade turnover between Ukraine and the People’s Republic of China (PRC), as well as on the sectoral structure of trade turnover in a chronological retrospective shortly before the full-scale invasion of russia. The author has conducted an analysis of Ukraine’s exports and imports with the PRC in both quantitative and qualitative (by the structure of goods and services) terms, and also expressed the characteristics of the industry structure of Ukraine’s economy during the specified period. The article highlights the problematic issues of developing economic relations in two dimensions: the pre-war period (2019 – early 2022) and the ongoing wartime period. The periods of 2021 and 2024 have been singled out for comparison, taking into account external and internal factors that affect the economy and foreign economic activity in the international market. The Ukrainian-russian war has undermined Ukraine’s economy, placing the State and social institutions in direct dependence on foreign aid, while national production has had to adapt to the needs of the front and the increasing pressure of tax policy. Considering the radical changes in military technologies and the introduction of unmanned systems, China’s role in Ukraine’s economy has taken on new forms, yet it remains extremely important. Systematic planning and the development of a strategy for conducting effective foreign economic policy and economic diplomacy will create the necessary groundwork for diversifying relationships and increasing Chinese capital involvement in the Ukrainian economy, especially for post-wartime recovery. Particular attention should be paid to reforms and a thorough review of Ukraine’s production strategy – with the aim of gradually moving away from being a material and raw materials base and increasing the share of value-added products both in export structure and for domestic use.
