Abstract:
The article examines current trends in foreign trade in the seed and planting material market. An analysis of the seed markets of countries with the largest domestic markets was conducted, identifying six main ones: the markets of the USA, China, France, Brazil, India, and Germany. It was determined that significant changes occurred in the structure of foreign trade in the seed and planting material sector during the wartime period. It was found that from 2019 to 2024, import operations in foreign trade were carried out with more than 59 countries worldwide. The main importers of seeds and planting material to Ukraine are the Netherlands (602 HS Code), the USA and France (1007 HS Code), India (through the import of ready-made fruits under a single HS code), and Germany (1209 – seeds and spores for sowing). The geography of exporting seeds, fruits, and other oilseeds is quite broad and includes 68 countries. Among the main partners for the period 2022–2024 are Germany, Hungary, and Italy. For a more objective assessment of foreign economic activity in the field of seeds and planting material, it is advisable to compare exports and imports by major product groups both in physical terms and in value terms. The analysis of foreign economic activity in the seed and planting material sector revealed that, both in the pre-war and wartime periods, the main weak point is the price of seeds and planting material. Based on the calculations conducted during the study period, it can be noted that in physical terms, exports exceed imports more than threefold (for grains – by hundreds of times), but in value terms, the export does not cover the import for the same product groups. This requires the development of measures to increase the competitiveness of domestic producers in the world’s strategically important seed and planting material markets.
